A Comparison of Deflation and Coarse Grid Correction Applied to Porous Media Flow
نویسندگان
چکیده
We compare various preconditioners for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. We compare a coarse grid correction preconditioner used in domain decomposition methods with a so-called deflation preconditioner. We prove that the effective condition number of the deflated preconditioned system is always, i.e. for all deflation vectors and all restrictions and prolongations, below the condition number of the system preconditioned by the coarse grid correction. This implies that the Conjugate Gradient method applied to the deflated preconditioned system converges always faster than the Conjugate Gradient method applied to the system preconditioned by the coarse grid correction. Numerical results for porous media flows emphasize the theoretical results. Domain Decomposition Methods and Deflated Krylov Subspace Iterations
The balancing Neumann-Neumann (BNN) and the additive coarse grid correction (BPS) preconditioner are fast and successful preconditioners within domain decomposition methods for solving partial differential equations. For certain elliptic problems these preconditioners lead to condition numbers which are independent of the mesh sizes and are independent of jumps in the coefficients (BNN). Here w...
متن کاملComparison of Binomial and Power Equations in Radial Non-Darcy Flows in Coarse Porous Media
Analysis of non-laminar flows in coarse alluvial beds has a wide range of applications in various civil engineering, oil and gas, and geology problems. Darcy equation is not valid to analyze transient and turbulent flows, so non-linear equations should be applied. Non-linear equations are classified into power and binomial equations. Binomial equation is more accurate in a wide range of velocit...
متن کاملOn the Performance of Different Empirical Loss Equations for Flow Through Coarse Porous Media (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this paper, the empirical equations that estimate hydraulic parameters for non-linear flow through coarse porous media are evaluated using a series of independent data collected in the laboratory. In this regard, three different relatively uniform soils ranging in size from 8.5 to 27.6 mm have been selected and three random samples drawn from each material. The physical characteristics such ...
متن کاملAn experimental study on hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flow in coarse-grained porous media
The equations of fluids in porous media are very useful in designing the rockfill and diversion dams, gabions, breakwaters and ground water reserves. Researches have been showed that the Forchheimer equation is not sufficient for the analysis of hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flows; because, in these flows, in addition to the hydraulic gradient and velocity, the variable of radius is...
متن کاملDetermination of the Nonlinear Equation Coefficients for Flow through Coarse Alluvium Foundations
As a result of the limitations in the application of Darcy Law (V=ki) to linear-laminar flow regimes through porous media and due to the fact that in coarse alluviums, the Reynolds number may exceed its critical value, the so-called Laplas equation cannot be used for precise analyses of coarse granular foundations. A more general relationship is, therefore, required for such cases. However, a c...
